Exploring the future........

It's around this time of year, every year, when I get a little homesick for three of my favourite places in the world namely, Canada, Scotland and Germany.....in no particular order. I think it's 'them there hills' and trees that call to me! I'm a sucker for the views but also the colder, blustery, often artic weather and especially in Canada, with her plethora of breath taking multi coloured autumnal trees. Mother Nature on steroids, that's my bag.
If I had to choose a favourite, I know I'd struggle. Lake or Loch......doesn't matter.
I obviously know the magic pull of 'born in Scotland' of course, but lately and more specifically I'm obsessed with the Highlands, the land and the lochs and from many family holidays there over the years.
I yearn for places with a thudding strong heart beat, earthy and raw. I like to meet nature head on.
Germany was (Hameln and later then Osnabruck) our first and fourth married posting (1989 &1995) and she never failed to deliver, the forrests, the rivers or the Alps, just fabulous.... or a good traditional German Christmas market and a huge glass of steaming Gluhwein. Stunning landscapes.
Gosh the winters back then, great training for future Canadian winters I feel!
We'd get in the car with the kids on any high day or holiday and drive at mark 1 on the AutoBahn to the Forces ski lodge to have a whale of a time, stopping over at an American base for the fun of it, a bowling game and huge pizza. Europe on our doorstep, just perfect! So many great memories made of shared armed forces Christmas dinners!
Canada? Our first experience of Toronto was in October 2018 on a look see to see if we might like to do a year there? We hit it at exactly the right time and even though I wasn't fond of the city, we quickly discovered Toronto in autumn is a show all on its own! We then moved there in January of 2019, moving into to our rental house for the
year in a snow storm! I just love wild weather and I also feel I do better in a colder climate. I wonder why? What I do know is that I suffered less inflammation during the winter.
Last year we spent our anniversary in the Highlands and then in the November we celebrated P's birthday in Bavaria. We took the dogs on both breaks but regretted our choice of Bavarian apartment accommodation because Watson was less than a year old and a right royal pain in the bum. He's nearly two now but I'm not sure I want to take him on holiday, he'd howl the place down if we left him! We were quite remote in Scotland but we didn't leave him much. The Highlands were blissful.
I don't feel the same about France, sorry to those that do love her and she doesn't even make my top 20 in the world, which is telling but not surprising. If I do think of her, it's in terms of things I made happen, such as that fabulous kitchen and bathroom we created or great times spent with friends in Aubeterre Sur Dronne. Nevertheless, I will always adore the Normandy beaches, who wouldn't!
I believe all of our (yes 'our' as he loves them too) 'favourite places' give us a baseline to work from, when thinking about a forever home down the line. We are fine here in the Wolds, of course we are but we always end up back here, it feels too easy. It's been like an invisible elastic band, consistently pinging us back since P was attached to the RAF in 1991. We very often leave the country for a new and exciting adventure, but pretty much always end up back in Lincolnshire, right where we started one way or another. It's a known entity, comforting and I guess, too easy. I don't wish to settle for easy. We only live once.
Our wish to run a hospitiality business is still strong but will our increasing age keep up with it? Are we barking up the wrong tree? Of course ageing does become a factor and is now high on the pro's and con's list. Philip also currently works for a company based in Canada and he has a bit of a niche there.
We do have options to live in Canada again but absolutely no rush to do so as it stands. Many office functions are hybrid now, so they would have to tell us exactly why we would need to be there full time? I think we will have those answers very soon. Of course whilst we loved aspects of Ontario, we didn't like where we lived, but that can be put right as we have experience of living there now. We also definitely lived a more outdoorsy lifestyle in Toronto, more so than here I'd say!
Give him a mountain in the distance and he's off!
I've always wanted to try living in Italy but where and honestly, I think thats probably not going to happen now, as we had such a fractured adventure in France. I do know one thing though, we are not quite as done as we quite thought with moving adventures. Go where your heart feels at home I say!
Anyway, we have choices, as I've always said 'we are not trees, we can move'. That said we are off to Canada soon just for a few weeks! I'm tagging along on one of his work trips in late November and it will be a good test to see if I fancy it down the line or not!
Be good and chat soon!

The Why?
The sorcery of
The Scottish Highlands have a magnetic charm that captivates visitors from all over the world. As someone who has spent countless hours exploring this stunning region, I can confidently say the Highlands are a treasure trove of natural beauty, rich history, and vibrant culture. In this blog post, I’ll share what makes the Highlands so beloved, from its breathtaking landscapes to its welcoming people.
The Majestic Landscapes
The sheer beauty of the Highlands is apparent from the moment you arrive. Picture rugged mountains, serene lochs, and wide-open skies that seem to stretch forever. Each part of this region offers a scene that can take your breath away.
Take Ben Nevis, for instance. Standing at 1,345 meters, it is the highest peak in the UK and offers adventurous trails for hikers of all skill levels. The views from the summit are awe-inspiring, with valleys that appear to roll infinitely into the horizon. According to recent statistics, over 130,000 people attempt to summit Ben Nevis each year, proving its allure as a hiking destination.
Ben Nevis towering over the landscape
The lochs are equally enchanting. Loch Ness, known for its mythical creature, offers a peaceful atmosphere with its tranquil waters reflecting the surrounding hills. Loch Awe, another stunning body of water, is famous for its picturesque views and fishing opportunities, attracting thousands of fishermen every year. It's not uncommon to see local anglers reeling in their catches, showcasing the loch's abundance.
Rich History and Culture
The Highlands are steeped in history, with every stone telling a story. From ancient castles to historic battlefields, the past is woven into the landscape.
Visiting Urquhart Castle on the shores of Loch Ness was a significant moment in my journey. This historic fortress, dating back to the 13th century, offers a glimpse into the region's tumultuous history. As I stood there, I could almost hear echoes of the past—the clashing of swords, the joyous feasts, and whispered legends. Recent research shows that around 250,000 people visit Urquhart Castle each year, drawn by its historical significance and stunning views.
The Highlands are also known for their vibrant culture. Traditional music, particularly the haunting melodies of bagpipes, is a key aspect of Highland identity. I recall attending a lively ceilidh in a local village, where everyone was encouraged to participate in the dances. The infectious energy of the community was a beautiful reminder of the close-knit relationships that thrive here.
The Warmth of the People
What truly sets the Highlands apart is the warmth and hospitality of its people. From the moment I arrived, friendly smiles and open hearts welcomed me.
In charming villages like Fort Augustus and Ballachulish, I found myself in local pubs, sharing stories over a freshly poured pint of ale. Locals take pride in their heritage, eagerly sharing tales about the legends of the Highlands and the significance of tartan patterns.
One evening, I struck up a conversation with an elderly gentleman who had lived in the Highlands all his life. He shared snippets of his youth, the changes he witnessed, and a deep love for the land. These intimate moments with locals made my visit even more special and fostered a genuine connection to the region.
Outdoor Adventures
For outdoor enthusiasts, the Highlands are a playground offering an array of adventures. Hiking, cycling, and water sports await those seeking thrills.
When I hiked through Cairngorms National Park, I was treated to breathtaking trails that wound through ancient forests and past cascading waterfalls. The exhilaration I felt when reaching a summit and taking in panoramic views will forever be etched in my memory.
For something different, I embarked on a kayaking adventure on Loch Shiel. Paddling through calm waters while surrounded by towering mountains offered a unique sense of freedom and tranquility. The Highlands truly provide an escape from the chaos of daily life, where adventure awaits at every turn.
Culinary Delights
No visit to the Highlands would be complete without indulging in its culinary delights. This region is famous for its fresh produce, hearty meals, and delicious whisky.
At a local restaurant, I enjoyed a delightful sampling of Highland cuisine. From traditional haggis to succulent venison, each dish celebrated the region's rich bounty. A whisky tasting session highlighted the intricacies of various distillation processes, revealing the unique flavors of each whisky. Did you know that Scotland produces around 90% of the world's Scotch whisky? This fact helps underline the importance of whisky to the local economy and culture.
Every meal became a memorable experience, thanks to the stunning scenery and outstanding flavors.

The trails cater to all skill levels, making them accessible to everyone. For example, the Eibsee loop around a beautiful lake at the base of Zugspitze was especially enjoyable. The turquoise waters were so inviting that I had to take a dip! I noticed that many families chose the serene trails, while more experienced hikers tackled challenging ascents. It is estimated that over 50 hiking trails in the region attract both locals and tourists alike each year.
Cultural Richness: Bavarian Traditions
The German Alps are rich in culture and traditions that go beyond the breathtaking scenery. I was excited to indulge in local cuisine, which features hearty Bavarian flavors. From warm pretzels and savory sausages to tender schnitzels and sweet strudels, every meal was a delightful experience.
One memorable evening, I found myself in a traditional beer garden, surrounded by enthusiastic locals and fellow travelers. The lively atmosphere buzzed with laughter and the clinking of steins. Continuing my exploration, I stumbled upon enchanting villages scattered throughout the German Alps. Each village had its own distinct charm, characterized by colorful houses, flower-laden balconies, and welcoming locals. One favorite was Oberammergau, renowned for its woodcarving tradition and the famous Passion Play.
As I wandered through the village, I admired the intricate wooden sculptures and beautifully painted building facades. A highlight was visiting a local workshop where artisans showcased their craftsmanship. I was mesmerized watching a skilled woodcarver bring figures to life, offering a unique glimpse into the region's artistic heritage.
Adventure Awaits: Outdoor Activities
For adventure seekers, the German Alps deliver a wealth of outdoor activities throughout the year. In the summertime, options like hiking, mountain biking, and paragliding are thrilling pursuits to explore. I decided to try paragliding, and it was an experience that I will cherish forever.
Soaring high above the mountains, I relished the exhilarating rush as I embraced the astonishing views from above. The freedom of gliding through the air surrounded by picturesque landscapes was unforgettable.
When winter arrives, the region transforms into a wonderland, drawing skiers and snowboarders from around the globe. The slopes are meticulously groomed, and the views are magical.
